Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
Sports have always been a large part of my life, helping me gain discipline that has benefited me with my life both on and off the court. Now, due to budget cuts and lack of numbers, freshman and middle school sports are in danger of being cut. For my capstone project, I am running the concession stands at our sporting events to help raise money for our athletic program. I will be coordinating who works what event, balancing the books, taking inventory, and actually helping run the concession stands, allowing students who need volunteer hours to help out whenever they can. With that, a handful of people have had the honor of making the all-state team, which is a big accomplishment for an athlete. However, many of these athletes don’t get a lot of recognition from the school, and the student body usually doesn’t see it as significant. I will be starting a GoFundMe page in order to raise money for the hanging of an all-state banner in the main gym. My goal is to raise $600 for the banner.
My research question is the following: How has the athletic budget changed in both SMSA and other schools in Connecticut over the years, and how does that correlate to the success of their programs? I chose this question because I never really knew how much of a problem money was until this year. Middle school and freshmen sports in our school are, and have been, in danger of getting cut. In exploring this question, it will help me understand every side of the story. The artifacts I plan on collecting are pictures of our stand setup, an inventory chart, and pictures of the people who are volunteering for the concessions.
For my capstone, my mentor is Mrs. Heidi Schmidt, the athletic director here at SMSA. You can reach her at [email protected] or (860)416-1548. She is qualified to be my mentor because she has a hand in all things that relate to the sports in the school. She also has run the concession stands for many years, so she knows what will be needed to raise as much money as possible. I predict that my learning stretch will be having a closer look into what it takes to run an athletic department, and see that it’s not as easy as it seems. I will also learn to be hyper-organized, allowing myself to rely on others, but telling someone they aren’t right for the job will test me the most.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Mayer
